Standard CNC RFQs deserve a priced answer within 4 working hours and complex multi-process projects within 3 days — quote speed is a proxy for how a shop runs. After the order, machining lead time is driven by material availability, surface treatment and inspection level; shops that quote fast usually commit to ship dates they actually keep.

Here is how the timeline breaks down at our plant — and how to read the signals from any supplier.

Stage 1 — quoting: hours, not days

4h

Standard RFQs

A priced answer within 4 working hours when the drawing, material, quantity and finish are stated. STEP, IGES, DWG, DXF or PDF all work — even a dimensioned sketch starts the clock.

3d

Complex multi-process projects

Parts needing machining plus finishing plus mold or fixture work get a fully analyzed answer within 3 days — the extra time buys you assumptions you can check, not a vague range.

4h

Every reply after that

The same 4-hour standard applies to follow-up questions, DFM feedback and order changes — the engineer who owns your job answers, and "keeping customers waiting is never an option" is a written rule here.

Stage 2 — production: what actually moves the date

1

Material on the shelf

Common stock (6061, 7075, 316L, 17-4PH, PEEK) starts cutting immediately; exotic or special-cert material adds procurement time. State where a substitute is acceptable and the date moves closer.

2

Finishing under one roof

Anodize, plating, black oxide and laser marking run in-house here — outsourced finishing is the silent lead-time killer at most shops.

3

Inspection level

100% first-article inspection and CMM reporting are standard with every shipment; full dimension stacks and PPAP-style documentation add inspection hours — ask for the level you actually need.

The honest test: ask two suppliers the same RFQ and compare when the answers land and whether each quote states its assumptions. The gap between those two speeds is almost never about the part.

Related questions

How fast will I get a quote?

Within 4 working hours for standard RFQs; within 3 days for complex multi-process projects.

What gets me the fastest, most accurate quote?

A drawing with tolerances called out on functional features, the material, the real annual quantity, the finish standard, and the inspection/reporting level. Tolerances tighter than the function needs are the #1 self-inflicted delay and cost driver.

Why do some suppliers take a week to quote?

Quoting speed reflects how the shop runs: a week to quote usually means a queue, a middleman, or unclear ownership — and the same pattern repeats in production.
